In
the northern bay on the left hand side stands the memorial for
Andreas Hofer, who was a Tyrolean freedom fighter and was shot
dead in Mantua in 1810.
The order to create a memorial was given by Emperor Franz I. The
sculptor Johann Nepomuk Schaller completed the statues and Josef
Klieber created the relief of the "Fahnenschwur" (Swearing
on the flag) based on a sketch by Josef Martin Schärmer.
Andreas Hofer is wearing a rustic traditional costume and is standing
with a flag and a carabine (a short rifle) slung over one shoulder
whilst his face is turned towards Emperor Maximilian's tomb. The
statue has strong plasticity and an extremely smooth surface,
which is typical of works from late Classicism.
Simple
plates on the floor in front of the memorial mark the graves of
the freedom fighters Josef Speckbacher, Father Joachim Haspinger
and Lieutenant Georg Hauger.
